Perfect Positioning for Healthy Sleep

Perfect Positioning for Healthy Sleep

There is no one right way to sleep, but certain positions may be better for people with certain types of pains and conditions. The important thing is to avoid strain to the joints, and keep in mind that sometimes simply taking the same form every night can aggravate a condition. Be conscious of your nightly position, every night.  Be sure your neck as well as back gets sufficient support. Here are a few common conditions, as well as the perfect sleeping position to address them.

•    Obstructive sleep apnea/snoring. Stay off your back, specialists say.
•    Acid Reflux. Sleep on your side.
•    Back pain. Sleeping on your back is often most comfortable. But for those suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, lying in any position can create significant pain. Bending one's knees and supporting them underneath with a small pillow may help.
•    Shoulder pain. Avoid sleeping on the afflicted shoulder. With a small pillow to support the bad shoulder, sleep on your back.
•    Neck pain. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. Sleep on your side or back.
